Parenting Advice Needed — Teen & Screen Time

I’ve been noticing something with my 13-year-old nephew that’s been on my mind. He’s constantly on his phone, mostly scrolling reels, and doesn’t really engage much in conversations with family or friends anymore. He keeps to himself a lot and seems irritated most of the time.

Both his parents work full-time, so I know it’s not easy to monitor everything closely. I also understand that this generation is growing up very differently from how we did.

For parents (or anyone who’s experienced this), how do you encourage healthier screen habits and better communication without turning it into constant conflict?

Would really appreciate practical, realistic advice.

I’ve noticed something similar with a younger family member, and it can be worrying. What seemed to help a bit was creating small moments of connection without making it about “the phone” like inviting them to help with something or asking about what they’re actually watching instead of criticising it.

I think sometimes feeling understood opens the door to better communication more than strict rules alone. It’s definitely not easy though.

Thank you, that’s actually such a helpful way to look at it. I really like the idea of creating small moments of connection without making it about the phone itself.

I think you’re right — going in with curiosity instead of criticism might make a big difference.

It’s reassuring to hear I’m not the only one noticing this. Definitely not easy, but your perspective makes it feel more manageable.
