Breast-feeding being taboo

Caz

I thought to share how important it is to breastfeed your child. Some women choose formula from the start; feeling that breastfeeding is against public norm. Believe it or not, there are women who think this. But of all the people I know who were not breastfed, they develop colic and grow up with major digestion issues. There’s also the lack of bonding between mother and child, and this puts strain on the relationship as the child gets older. The colostrum in breast milk cannot be replaced as well, and this is important for the child’s development. I feel it is necessary to make a point of this to new Mom’s – unless there’s medical reasons for them choosing formula over nature. Formula from the start can lead to greater complications in life, as the child gets older. If anyone has anyone questions about this, I’d be happy to share what I know.

This is such a complex topic. Breastfeeding clearly has benefits, especially early on, but I’ve also realised that every family’s situation is different. At the same time, motherhood comes with many different circumstances, and not every woman has the same options or support.

I once had a colleague who chose formula feeding from the start because she needed to return to work to support her family, and it had also been recommended by her doctor. That conversation made me realise how many different factors can influence a mother’s decision. I also felt that, since I don’t have children yet, she may have thought I couldn’t fully understand her situation.

It made me reflect on how I can approach conversations like this with more empathy and less judgment. I’d genuinely be interested in hearing different perspectives and experiences on this topic.
